This rare first edition of Takitimu by J.H. Mitchell is a historically significant Māori historical text, documenting the genealogy, traditions, and history of Ngāti Kahungunu and the Takitimu waka.
The book was personally presented to Sir Cyril in 1944 at Takitimu House, Wairoa, by the Ngāti Kahungunu people, in appreciation of his visit.
The presentation inscription is hand-signed by the author an reads as follows - "To Sir Cyril Newall G.C.B O.M G.C.M.G C.B.E Governor General of the Dominion of New Zealand - In appreciation of his visit to Takitimu House, Wairoa 1943 from Ngati-Kahungunu H.B." the note dated 1944.
