AN INDIAN MUTINY GROUP OF THREE TO THE RIFLE BRIGADE. An India General Service medal with Northwest Frontier clasp named to 447 Pte G. Brown 3 Bn Rif Bde. An Indian Mutiny Medal with Lucknow clasp named to Geo. Brown 3rd Bn Rifle Bde, Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (2nd type) to 447 Corpl G. Brown 3rd Rifle Bde. Unmounted. George Brown appears to have been born in Beaminster in Dorset. He attested on the 16th March 1855, initially with the First Battalion before transferring to the 3rd. He was promoted Corporal on the 27th May 1959 before being reduced to a Private for drunkenness. Discharged on the 18th May 1866he was re-engaged on the 24th August 1866. Raised to the rank of Corporal on the 23rd February 1876. George Brown is recorded with the 3rd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade in Bareilly, India and Aden, Yemen. He was discharged at his own request after 21 years Service in June 1876, at this time he was in possession of five good conduct badges and was recommended for the Good Conduct Medal. He had four entries in the Regimental Defaulters book, one of which was a trial by Court Martial. He appears to have lived at 36 Grove Buildings in Fordington, Dorchester with his wife Mary and three children Mary, George and Charles. He died in 1909 and is buried in Fordington.
