AN INDIAN STEEL KATAR WITH GOLD INLAID, 18TH CENTURY

This Indian katar, or punch dagger, is constructed of steel with gold decorative elements. The weapon features a double-edged blade of tapering triangular form with deep longitudinal fullers. The central ridge of the blade is decorated with gold inlaid depicting floral and foliate scrollwork. The steel hilt is of the traditional H-shaped configuration, consisting of two long parallel side guards connected by two transverse cross-bars. The exterior surfaces of the side guards display gold floral motifs within borders on a textured ground. The two cross-bars are designed with central swells and are decorated with chiseled foliate patterns and gold accents.
