JAMES KENT (Old Foley) CHINOISERE BLUE & WHITE Large 26.5cm Dia DISH
(James Kent Pottery, founded in 1897, is renowned for its high-quality earthenware and china, particularly known for the "Old Foley" brand.
James Kent established his pottery company in 1897 in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England. The company initially operated under the name "Old Foley," reflecting its location in the Foley district. Unlike many other British porcelain manufacturers, James Kent did not engage in mergers and acquisitions for several decades, allowing the company to maintain its independence and focus on quality production.
By 1910, James Kent had transformed the business into a limited company, which allowed for further expansion. The factory employed around 300 people at its peak, producing a wide range of domestic pottery items. The company was known for its decorative pieces, often featuring floral designs and intricate patterns, which became popular among consumers.
One of the most famous patterns produced by James Kent is the "Du Barry" pattern, introduced in 1934. This pattern is characterized by its dense floral designs and pastel colors, reflecting the opulence of the Rococo era. The company continued to produce this pattern until 1980, showcasing its enduring popularity.
James Kent continued as a family-run business until 1981, when it was sold to Bayer (UK) Ltd. The company underwent several changes in ownership and branding over the years, including a brief association with potter Morris Rushton and later becoming part of County Potteries PLC. In 1989, the company was acquired by M.R. Hadida Ltd., which led to a resurgence of interest in classic patterns from the James Kent archives.
James Kent Pottery is remembered for its contributions to the pottery industry, particularly for its high-quality earthenware and distinctive patterns. The legacy of James Kent continues to be celebrated by collectors and pottery enthusiasts alike, with many of its classic designs still sought after in the antique market.)
