A Tibetan high-ranking lama bed or throne, 19th century or earlier, Shigatse region, four main polychrome yellow and red wooden sections and slats secured with mortise and tenon joints, the back panel shaped with scalloped profile meeting in a central ogee point, the front board carved with three inset panels, yellow painted with flowering tendrils and flanked by two ball-finial posts, the back panel similarly painted, yellow ochre ground with blossoming peonies, bordered in blue and flanked by two facet cut ball finial posts, with a central design of an ogee bordered cartouche containing a river scene with blooming lotus blossoms bearing the flaming sword and two headed birds, symbols of the great Tibetan translators, height: 72cm, depth: 107cm, width: 187cm when assembled (8) Note: 'bed' and 'throne' are often used interchangeably in Buddhist texts, exemplified by the 'sitting-in-the-bed' and enthronement rituals undertaken for the new Dalai Lama, see Bonhams, London, 'The Collection and Archive of Sir Basil Gould CBE', 5 Jun 2025 See Rubin Museum collection for depictions of enthroned lamas seated on similar beds or thrones, C2006.66.598 and C2006.66.421 Provenance: The Alain Rouveure Collection
