Watson (British 20th Century) Sir Gordon Richards on Rose of England, signed and dated 1930 lower left, titled lower right, inscribed 'Frank Briggs Newmarket 1930' lower left, oil on canvas, 51 x 69 cm, frame 61 x 79 cm Shropshire-born Sir Gordon Richards (1904-1986) was one of the most celebrated jockeys in history. During his career he rode 4,870 winners from 21,843 rides and was the British Flat Racing Champion Jockey 26 times. Richards was the first jockey to be knighted, in 1953, following his much anticipated Derby win. Rose of England (1927-1947) was bred by Lady James Douglass and trained by Thomas Hogg at Newmarket for owner Lord Glanely. She ran with Richards for the Oaks at Epsom and won by three lengths.
