Short History of the Rittreck MKK 6×9 Film SLR
The Rittreck 6×9, introduced in 1968 by the Japanese company Musashino Kōki K.K. (MKK), is a large-format medium-format SLR known for its robust build and modular design. Unlike most medium-format SLRs, the Rittreck accepted multiple film formats, including 6×9, 6×7, 6×6, and even sheet film with optional backs, making it unusually versatile.
Key Historical Points
Manufacturer: Musashino Koki K.K., a small Japanese optical firm founded in the 1950s.
Modular System: Interchangeable lenses, viewfinders, and film backs—similar in concept to Hasselblad but on a much larger scale.
Lens Mount: Featured its own proprietary mount; lenses were produced primarily by Komura, known for solid optical quality.
Market Role: Aimed at studio, landscape, and professional photographers who wanted large negatives without moving to heavy view cameras.
Rebranding: In the early 1970s, the camera was rebranded and sold as the Norita 66 after Norita Optical purchased rights to the system, though the Norita focused on 6×6 rather than 6×9.
End of Production
Production was limited, and the system quietly disappeared as smaller, more automated medium-format cameras from Mamiya, Bronica, and Pentax dominated the market.
