A vintage Haemacytometer, used to determine the concentration of cells (like blood cells, bacteria, or yeast) in a sample.
In the original fitted case with remnants of a label for Robert Whitelaw (Newcastle on Tyne), who worked at the Aberdeen City Hospital for Infectious Diseases in the 1930s-1950s. The thick glass slide is also etched with a government issue broad arrow.
