Major-General Douglas Wimberley – Scottish Soldier, Volume II (Privately Bound Manuscript). A remarkable, privately bound copy of Scottish Soldier, Volume II by Major-General Douglas Wimberley — a personal and unpublished memoir recounting his experiences during the Second World War, including his command of the 51st Highland Division in North Africa and the Sicily Campaign. This volume contains numerous handwritten annotations and corrections by the author, as well as maps and drawings illustrating specific battles and operations. Of notable provenance, Wimberley lent a copy of this memoir to Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, whose typed copy of his note is mounted to the front, reads: “It has been a great privilege to be allowed to read this private story, the more so as it is written by one of my best Divisional Generals. It gives a picture of the Scottish soldier, a grand fighting man, as I know well. To me it has been intensely interesting to hear the point of view of a Divisional Commander regarding the Battle of Alamein, and the subsequent operations of the Eighth Army in the desert campaign and in Sicily.” A deeply personal and insightful history, the memoir traces Wimberley’s military career from 1939 then through his key wartime commands, culminating in his appointment as Commandant of the Staff College, Camberley. An exceptional piece of military history offering a rare first-hand account from one of Britain’s distinguished divisional commanders.
