Oil on board depicting the artist’s daughter Rachel, and probably set in Spain, this painting has a quiet meditative atmosphere. Rachel is depicted seated, her hands on her lap, on the ledge of a window or terrace. She is casually dressed in blue jeans and a jumper. Behind her a landscape is suggested by pale swirling forms of pale green and yellow. In the foreground, set an angle, is a white chair with a red cushion. A plant in a pot, and a rug are the only other objects depicted in this interior, the atmosphere of which is enhanced by the window forming a frame within a frame, with interior and exterior treated as one, and also by the
minimalist depiction of Rachel’s features.
Born in 1925, Barbara Warren attended the National College of Art, before moving to London where she studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic. She continued her studies in Paris, at the atelier of Andre Lhôte. Since then, she has painted mainly in Dublin, the West of Ireland and in Spain. A teacher for many years at NCAD, she is a regular exhibitor at the RHA, and has had many solo shows, including at the Taylor Galleries in Dublin. In 1999, Warren’s work was included in the Florence Biennale. A member of Aosdana, she has remained throughout her life a figurative artist, specialising in still-lifes, interior scenes and landscapes. However the apparent simplicity of her work belies the careful compositions, and avoidance of unnecessary detail. While Warren’s early paintings show the influence of
studies in France, over the years she has evolved her own style, characterised by a sense of quiet and reflection. This is often enhanced by the inclusion of a figure—in this case her daughter Rachel.
