Greville IRWIN (1893-1947) The Cortege, St Ives (1946) Oil on canvas laid onto board, signed and dated '46, further signed to verso, 40 x 31cm, framed 59 x 50cm Cataloguer's Note This work depicts the funeral procession for the lives lost during the wreckage of the French Crabber 'Finisterre' of Cameret, the vessel was driven ashore by a strong northerly gale onto the rocks at Porthminster Point during the early hours of Saturday the 10th of August 1946, three of the four crew members were killed. The moving burial (depicted here) commenced at the Catholic Church in St Ives and was attended by more than thirty Bretons from Crabbers lying at Newlyn. Joseph Trevillion and Eugene Carn were buried at Barnoon Cemetary; the body of their shipmate Pierre Derrien was yet to be recovered. The burial at Barnoon Cemetary is depicted in a further painting by Greville Irwin, acquired by St Ives Guildhall in 1946. The Estate of Sir Geoffrey & Lady Holland
