A PAINTED WOOD SUTRA MANUSCRIPT COVER WITH A LAMA AND A FOUR-ARMED BODHISATTVA 西藏 13-14世纪 古格王朝 彩绘喇嘛与菩萨护经板 Tibet Guge kingdom, 13-14thcentury The upper panel painted with two seated figures—likely a lama and a bodhisattva—each enclosed within a circular foliate medallion formed by scrolling lotus tendrils, their hands held in meditative and teaching gestures. Between them rises a stylized stupa or shrine rendered in yellow and ochre tones, serving as a vertical divider. The composition is framed by a narrow red border delicately decorated with scrolling cloud motifs. The reverse painted with rows of concentric roundels in deep red and black, centering on a vertical cartouche inscribed possibly with auspicious Buddhist symbols representing the Seven Precious Emblems (sapta ratna). The overall surface bears a rich patina of age and ritual handling, characteristic of manuscript covers used to protect sacred Buddhist texts in monastic settings. Size.11x43.1cm
The painted surface shows age-related wear, particularly on the reverse, where the central decorative motif has become almost indistinguishable. The edges of the wooden panel exhibit abrasion, and a rectangular section measuring approximately 4.5 cm in length is missing from the reverse, extending from the edge toward the center.
