An Indian Illustration to a Ragamala Series: Ramkali Ragini, Sirohi, Circa 20th Century.
An Indian miniature painting executed in opaque watercolour, representing Ramkali Ragini from a Ragamala series in the Sirohi style. The composition is enclosed within a bold red border and further framed by a fine inner black line, typical of later Ragamala interpretations.
The upper register depicts a domed pavilion with architectural detailing, accompanied by foliage and birds, including a peacock perched gracefully beside flowering shrubs. A Devanagari inscription across the top identifies the subject as Ramkali Ragini.
Below, within an open terrace pavilion, a noble couple is shown seated upon a low couch. The female attendants surround them in an intimate courtly setting. One attendant waves a fly-whisk above the couple, while others stand or sit nearby in gestures of service and conversation. The figures are adorned in richly patterned garments of red, green, and gold tones, with delicate jewellery and stylised facial features characteristic of the regional idiom.
