Joseph Chamberlain/Winston Churchill. 1899 (Nov 13) Four page letter written and signed by Joseph Chamberlain, the Colonial Secretary, to Winston Churchill, thanking him for a copy of his latest book "The River War", and referring to the Boer War - "I suppose that you are now once more in the thick of things & I hope you will have the opportunity of describing the most interesting state of the present conflict. Up to the present time it has proceeded very much as I expected when I saw you last, except that we have held our own better than I hoped & the conduct of the troops has exceeded even the most sanguine anticipations. I imagine that you will not find many of your contemporaries to whom it has been given to witness & report the exploits of British arms in such different circumstances as those in the North West Frontier, Egypt & the Transvaal".
