An Iranian ex. Ararat bottle of Cognac Imperiale, Provenance: one of the last bottles of alcohol produced before the 1979 uprising in Iran, in which the Islamic Revolution overthrew the Shah. At the time John Murtagh was distiller to the Shah and this was one of many products he produced for the Shah & his entourage. At the time of the uprising, Murtagh’s safety was threatened as the revolutionaries named him, amongst others, they wished to hunt down. He filled the Shah’s swimming pool with gin and then went into hiding: Murtagh built an extension to his bed, hid under it while mercenaries where looking for him and then took to the hills – orienteering himself across country until he reached an airport, he smuggled himself into the cargo of a plane and through a long-winded journey returned to his home country of Ireland – this bottle returned with him.
