Michael McNamara was born in Speenymoor in 1871. He attested on the 18th of August 1891 in his home town. McNamara had previously served with the Durham light Infantry, but has purchased his discharged after a very short period. In civilian life he had been a miner.
A member of the 1st Bn, he served in South Africa during the Second Boer War for just over two years, earning the QSA and KSA. On the 19th of June 1902 he was disagreed to the reserves.
He returned to the mines and worked there until he rejoined the army on the 10th of May 1916, serving with the Royal Fusiliers. With the 25th Bn he fought in East Africa. On the 9th of December 1917, he was posted home and joined the Labour Corps, discharged to the reserves on the 11th of April 1919, he rejoined 28-1-19 and was disagreed for the final time on 16-3-20.
