A carved hardwood Lamaist dancer's mask, Mahaka-type iconographic form, Tibet, late 18th/early 19th century, modelled with multi-skull crown above a relief third eye centred in the forehead, flaming brows and bulging eyes, a wide nose above a fierce incised mouth with fanged teeth dripping blood, polished patinated surface with evidence of historic polychrome decoration, hollowed interior with partial wax export seal, 30 by 27cm Note: In Tibetan Buddhism, Mahakala is celebrated as a Dharmapala, or a protector of dharma, depicted in 'krodha' or wrathful form. These Mahakala masks would be used exclusively by lamaist monks, not laymen, during the celebration of religious festivals.Provenance: The Alain Rouveure Collection
