A SAILOR'S WOOD AND PIQUÉ WORK 'GOING ASHORE' STICK, MID-19TH CENTURY
with thick bulbour handle, the shaft decorated in brass piqué work with crown, fouled anchor, and stylised flowers, with the mottos USE ME WHEN WANTED / SEBASTOPOL Sept 8th 1855 / Honour the Queen / fear god' and the date 1857 -- 37in. (94cm.) long
This stick was clearly intended for self-defence as much as a walking accessory, suggesting the shore leave in the Crimea could be very boisterous!
