A FINE GEORGE IV 1822 PATTERN SANDHURST PRESENTATION SWORD BY PROSSER, DATED 1822. A presentation sword with a 79 cm spear pointed, pipe backed blade with presentation inscription 'Presented to William Moorsom by the Gentleman cadets of the C. Company at the Royal Military College Sandhurst, June 14th 1822 as a token of their sincere regard and esteem' to the other side in Latin 'Summum crede nefas animam praeferre pudori, El propter vitam, vivendi perdere causas', a quotation from Juvenal (Believe it the greatest sin to prefer life to honor, and for the sake of life to lose the reasons for living). Marked to the ricasso 'Prosser Sword Cutler to the King London/Charring Cross. The gilt guard with George IV cypher beneath a crown, with folding inner edge. The wire-bound shagreen guard with a decorated back strap and stepped oval pommel In a brass mounted leather scabbard with inscription 'Prosser Sword manufacturer to the King London'. With twin ring suspension. 94 cm.
Break in scabbard, rubbing to surfaces. An historic sword.
