A single pair of early twentieth-century silver 'Dutch Doll' sugar tongs, by Cohen & Charles, London 1911, with a painted face in polychrome enamel, with articulated arms and legs, the engraved "Mary H. Ledyard from Grannie", and "1927 HKH 7-7-59", length 9cm, weight (sans case) 84g/2.70ozt approx Note: The Dutch Doll sugar tongs were inspired by The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a 'Golli' by Florence Kate Upton (1895). The characters were staged, with Jessica Black playing Sarah Ann in the 1901 play Katawampus, earning praise for her "wooden" portrayal. In 1905, a Dutch Doll dance featured in The Dancing Doll ballet at the Empire Theatre.
