A 1953 Queen Elizabeth II coronation, limed oak stool, the concave shaped seat covered in a blue velvet with gold braiding, branded in black 'ER' surmounted by a crown and 'Coronation' on the inside of the seat rail. 46cm wide x 31cm deep, seat height 46cm Issued to the English jockey Gordon Richards, thence by descent to the vendor. Footnote:Gordon Richards (1904-1986) was an English jockey who gained 26 flat racing championship wins, and was the first of his profession to receive a knighthood, this being conferred in the Coronation year, 1953. Richards naturally attended the coronation ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral and, like other guests, was able to purchase his seat as a memento. The present lot is that seat, consigned by Gordon Richards' great niece. Also in this auction, from the same source, a portrait of Richards upon Rose of England, the thoroughbred broodmare that took the jockey to win the 1930 Oaks at Epsom with odds of 7/1 (lot 90) Condition:Legs are slightly loose. Seat upholstery faded and with some minor marks/stains.
