*Offered on behalf of Graham 'Cup Cake' Cooper—a longtime friend of Eric Clapton who has owned at least two Stephen Kearney guitars—this instrument represents the work of a luthier with a fascinating and unconventional path. Originally from New Zealand, Stephen Kearney developed an appreciation for Australia during a 1978 tour with his band. After relocating permanently, he pursued a variety of careers, including work as a National Parks Ranger, radio producer, and magazine writer. Yet through it all, his passion for guitars remained constant. Initially focused on repairing vintage instruments, Kearney gradually transitioned into full-time luthiery. By 1993, he was crafting around a dozen custom guitars annually, all built to order. Though his instruments were made exclusively by commission, he always kept two on hand to showcase his craftsmanship. Among his distinguished clientele are Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler.
