A Mughal or Deccani Carved Bone Lion Head Hilt - A Mughal carved hilt, fashioned from pale cream-colored bone. The hilt features a classical-inspired design, surmounted by a finely carved roaring lion's head. The lion's head displays a detailed stylized mane and an open, aggressive maw. The tapering, roughly rectangular shaft terminates in scrolled volutes at its base. This object likely served as an implement handle or finial, consistent with a dagger or sword grip from the Mughal or Deccani period.

More Information

Numerous age-related cracks and fissures are visible throughout the body and head. Areas of dark brown discoloration are present, consistent with handling and environmental exposure. The bottom surface shows a rough, possibly severed attachment point with significant internal staining, indicating it was formerly part of a larger assembly. No visible repairs or restorations.
