Victorian 1st Royal Dragoons Officers Foreign Service Helmet from the Sudan / Boer War Campaigns, fine example of the early pattern foreign service helmet with white cloth folded pagri. Brass patterned base and fluted officers spike. Brass linked chin chain. Green cloth covering to the interior and brown leather sweatband and red silk lining. Leather tailors label to the interior. The helmet is housed in the original japanned storage tin with brass name plaque ‘C. Smith Esqr 1st Royal Dragoons’.

In 1877 the 1st Dragoons were re-titled 1st Royal Dragoons, the regiment saw action at the battle of Abu Klea in January 1885 during the Mahdist War. At the outbreak of the second Boer War, the regiment was sent to South Africa and they took part in the relief of Ladysmith, battles of Colenso and Spion Kop.
