MONTBLANC: AN 18K GOLD, MARBLE, MOTHER-OF-PEARL AND ENAMEL 'GAIUS MAECENAS, PATRON OF ART' FOUNTAIN PEN Limited Edition 545/888 The private collection of a Roman Lady (lot 103 to 111) The 18K gold skeletonised cap applied with 'MAECENAS ATAVIS EDITE REGIBUS', the top set with a mother-of-pearl and enamel Montblanc logo, gladiator sword-shaped clip with gold hilt and metal blade, ring cap engraved with 'GAIUS CILNIUS MAECENAS', 18K gold nib with laurel wreath motif and Roman numerals 'MMXI' and '4810' signed Montblanc, fluted white marble barrel in the shape of a Roman column, 18K gold cone with engraved Greek key detailing, set at the base with a coin depicting Maecenas' portrait, piston filling mechanism, signed Montblanc, length 14cm Issued in 2011 to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Patron of Art series, this limited edition of 888 fountain pens pays tribute to Gaius Cilnius Maecenas, the Roman statesmen and advisor to Emperor Augustus, long regarded as the founding figure of cultural patronage. Its design draws on the architecture of ancient Roman temples, with a barrel fashioned from fine marble and a skeletonised cap in solid 750 gold. The cap is engraved with the opening line of Horace's ode to Maecenas, while the gold cap ring bears his name. The cone is finished with a reproduction of an ancient Roman coin portraying Maecenas, and the clip takes the form of a Roman gladius. Completing the design, the 18-carat gold nib is engraved with a laurel wreath and the Roman numerals MMXI.
The jewellery department has contacted a Montblanc boutique, which confirmed that the pen was retailed for €8,000 at the time, and declared that today an equivalent at current market retail value would be €12,000 Working, refilled with ink by the jewellery department Normal signs of wear, overall in good condition Total gross weight approx. 85.7g
