Private Charles Thompson served in South Africa (Zulu War) from 25th February 1879 until 17th October 1879, they were part of the force that visited and buried the dead at Isandhlwana in May 1879 and during the second invasion was part of the battle of Ulundi where they made a famous charge.
Thompson also served in the East Indies from 18th October 1879 until 22nd January 1883 and India 23rd November 1887 until 28th May 1889 when he was discharged.
On discharge for special qualifications for employment in civilian life where he was noted as 'A good indoor servant also a good groom and horseman'. (R)
