Allport, Birmingham a mahogany drop-dial wall clock: the eight-day duration, single-fusee movement having an anchor escapement and shaped plates, the twelve-inch round painted convex dial having black Roman numerals and signed Allport, Birmingham, with blued steel spade hands, the mahogany case having a brass edged glazed panel to the flat-bottomed drop and shaped ears, height 50cm. * Biography Samuel Allport is recorded as working at 38 Bull Ring, Birmingham from circa 1812 until at least 1860 having been apprenticed to William Waight in 1802, interestingly along with his son Henry. Samuel is known to have made drop-dial wall clocks with an example illustrated in Joseph McKenna Clockmakers & Watchmakers of Central England publisher Mayfield Books 2002 and which has the same font for the lettering.
