Köln, 1934
Etching aquatint in colours
Signed in pencil bottom right and numbered 8/100
Etching 58cm x 43cm
Inscribed in German to Major FMC Fetherston-Godley "in remembrance of the visit to the city of Cologne during the first trip to Germany by the British Legion after the World War, 23rd July 1935". Major Fetherston-Godley was then Chairman of the British Legion. As part of the visit to Germany he and other delegates were received by Adolf Hitler at the Reich Chancellery in Berlin with the aim of furthering peace and good relations between veterans of all nations. The artist, Kasimir, had been a member of the NSDAP since 1933, despite it being illegal in Austria at the time, and stood trial after the Second World War. His politics aside, he was among the first to develop the technique of coloured etching. This view of Cologne was to change substantially from 1940, as the city was bombed in 262 separate air raids carried out by the Allies. The bridge was destroyed in 1945.
