This retrospective volume is presented in the original pictorial dust jacket, featuring a photographic self-portrait of the artist on the front cover and the title printed vertically in bold black and mirrored grey. The book contains 434 illustrations, including 60 colour plates, documenting the artist's career up to the mid-1970s. Significant works featured include Tea Painting in an Illusionistic Style (1961), Flight into Italy – Swiss Landscape (1962), The Valley (1970), and Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1971). A circular graphic emblem depicted on one page shows a stylised face with the printed text David Hockney 1955. The volume is bound in publisher's cloth boards.
