Fine Collection of Original Sketches
Maclise (Daniel). A rare collection of 40 original pencil sketches of historical costume and mediaeval dress, presumable derived from early pictures and engravings and used by him as reference material for his major historical paintings. Each mounted on card and numbered variously between Nos 11 & 163, c. 18cms x 10cms (7 1/4" x 4"), some with the date of the original drawing. As a collection of drawings, w.a.f. Ex. Scarce. (4)
* Maclise from Cork, became a very successful painter of historical subjects in London including large frescoes in the House of Commons, 'The Death of Nelson' and The Meeting of Wellington and Blucher.'. 'The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife,' a mammoth oil on canvas is at the National Gallery of Ireland.
Provenance: From the Sale of Maclise's Estate at Christies, June 24, 1870 (see note on cover of original folder). Later presented to Wm. Brookes Esq. by his brother on Nov. 5th 1870, (see note). Later purchased by present owner in 1988 at the dispersal sale at Adare Manor in Co. Limerick. (1)
