The rigid framed Matchless G3/AJS Model 16M 350 cc single was developed in 1945 from the military World War II motorcycle. The company also produced an almost identical motorcycle under the AJS name as the G3L with the only difference between the two was that the Matchless carried a magneto at the rear of the cylinder barrel, whereas the AJS magneto was at the front.
Post war the G3 had several upgrades including a swing arm suspension, aluminium cylinder head, and uprated engine bearings. In 1958 an alternator was offered along with a steering damper, brake light and an air filter.
CTX was owned by John Watts in 1978 and in 1990 he had the registration number changed to XSU 330 and sold it to Eric Gillman. Our vendor bought it in 1996 in need of a full rebuild. Over a number of years he stripped it down and had the frame and parts powder coated, the running gear was overhauled with stainless spoke in the new rims, the engine and gearbox were stripped and rebuild with a plus 20 piston. With the help of the owners club he successfully had its original registration number replaced (XSU 330 will sold sold as a cherished number in the Automobilia section of this auction).
There are old MOT's on file from 1986 when the registration number was 214 CTX, with a recorded mileage of 16,174 miles, the next year it had changed to XSU 330. These go through to 2004 at 30,086 miles. Today the odometer shows 34,807 miles.
It has been stored for several years due to ill health and will require some recommissioning.
