** The work has a label verso giving biographical details on the painter, who was one of the most important black and white artists to emerge in the 1890's in the British tradition. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute in 1897 and his remaining drawings were exhibited at a memorial show at the Leicester Galleries in 1903
