Admiral James Gambier. 1809 (Mar 22) Letter from "Caledonia in Basque Roads" to Rear Admiral Sir John Duckworth acknowledging receipt of letters and a report of the squadron s proceedings. Gambier captained the "Defence", the first ship to break the enemy s line at Howe s victory of 1st June 1794, bombarded Copenhagen capturing the Danish fleet in 1807 and destroyed the French fleet in Basque Roads in 1811.
