An Elers type red stoneware mug, probably early 18th century, of cylindrical form, with engine-turned banded borders and prunus blossom sprigs in the Chinese style, white metal rim, 9cm high Notes: John Philip Elers and his elder brother David were Dutch-born silversmiths who arrived in London in the 1680s. Their unglazed red stoneware was produced at Bradwell Wood in Staffordshire for a short time between 1690 - 1698. This unglazed red body was inspired by Chinese Yixing wares, much of which was then imported by the Dutch East India Company and widely imitated.
