A Large Islamic Magical Protective Scroll with Demonic Figures and Talismanic Inscriptions, Dated 1402 AH (1981–82 AD).
Executed on paper in ink, pigments, and gilt, the scroll is arranged in a series of vertical panels framed by gold rules and deep blue borders with scrolling floral decoration. The upper section features an illuminated cartouche filled with dense Arabic script in red, set against a gold ground with vegetal motifs. Below are multiple registers containing talismanic inscriptions in black, red, and blue inks, interspersed with geometric devices and panels of calligraphy.
The central sections depict a sequence of highly stylised anthropomorphic and demonic figures, rendered in linear form and filled with tightly packed Arabic script. These figures display exaggerated facial features including wide eyes, fanged mouths, horns, and wing-like appendages, with details heightened in red and gold. Additional motifs include symbolic diagrams, grid squares, and amuletic forms, all integrated with continuous inscriptions.
