A RARE INSCRIBED SAUDI ARAB JAMBIYA DAGGER AND SCABBARD TAKEN AT THE BATTLE OF TALNEIR 1818
This lot features a Saudi Arab Janbiya dagger and its matching scabbard, serving as a documented war trophy from the Third Anglo-Maratha War. The upper face of the scabbard bears a crisp commemorative engraving in a formal serif script that reads: TAKEN AT THE BATTLE OF TALNEIR. / 27th Feby 1818. This inscription refers to the capture of the Talneir fort in Maharashtra, India, by British forces under Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Hislop. The dagger consists of a curved, double-edged steel blade with a prominent central medial ridge. The I-shaped hilt is constructed from a dark polished horn and is heavily embellished with silver-colored metal mounts featuring intricate filigree, granulation, and chased geometric designs. The pommel and guard sections are secured with decorative silver pins. The wooden-core scabbard is entirely encased in silver-colored metal, decorated in registers with repousse floral motifs, chased borders, and fine filigree work. The mid-section includes two suspension rings, and the chape is finished with a multi-layered decorative finial.
