Romanesque Norman figural carved stone depicting the image of a Sheela Na Gig, an architectural grotesque portraying a naked woman displaying exaggerated genetalia, 11" wide, 12" high
-
** There is much disagreement about the origin of these sheela na gig carvings, but noted to be first carved in France and Spain during the 11th century and the motif eventually reaching Britain and then Ireland in the 12th century.
-
** This example has interesting local provenance being discovered in a wall of a Bradford-On-Avon garden, in an area known to have had much recent Roman excavations including forexample a Roman Villa at St Laurence School, Budbury
