Sale Description:
The Edmund Blampied and John Nicolson Art Collection Together with Early
Thames TV Archive Material, Antiques, Collectables, Coins and Ephemera.
Originating from the Nicolson family home this somewhat rare and large
collection of artworks by these well-known artists is to be offered for
sale.
The provenance of which is detailed below: -
Edmund Blampied born Jersey 1886, moved to London having made earlier
studies, whilst there he joined the London County Council School of
Photo-Engraving and Lithography at Bolt Court. For the final year of his
scholarship where he became friends with John Nicolson and Saloman van
Abbe who later became his brother in law, Blampied having married
Marianne van Abbe. Work from all three artists appear in this sale.
After this time and prior to WW1, Blampied returned to Jersey, however,
at the end of the war he returned to London to resume his art career
where he had left off.
In need of a roof over his head in war torn London, Edmund Blampied took
up lodgings in the family home of his earlier art school friend John
Nicolson, who by then was also becoming a prominent illustrator in the
publishing world and producing many similar works. One can see from this
interesting and somewhat rare collection that they appear to have had
some considerable influences on each other’s work.
John Nicolson’s son, Jim, was a prominent designer with Thames TV in the
early days and the sale also includes some interesting and rare archive
material to include scripts for famous shows such as ‘Sooty’, ‘Rainbow’,
‘Opportunity Knocks’, ‘This is Your Life’ and also includes an early
Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers script.
