Consular Service: 1886 DLR Key type 1s green (2), and £1 lilac, each affixed to small archive piece and showing a different unissued Surcharge ESSAY, the first ‘large block ’1s', the others denominated thick sans serif ‘ONE SHILLING’ and ‘ONE POUND’ respectively, rejected in favour of ‘1/-' and ‘£1’ surcharge format. An interesting and very rare trio of essays produced after concerns were raised around the clarity of face values on the standard key type set.
