£50 - £100
17th CENTURY BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER WITH CONTEMPORARY ANNOTATIONS. The Book of Common Prayer. London: Printed by Charles Bill, Henry Hills, and Thomas Newcomb, Printers to the King most Excellent Majesty, 1686. Bound in brown morocco with raised bands and border tooling. Gilt edges, mostly faded. Marbled endpapers. Front cover loose, rear cover and several rear leaves detatched.
A typical example of a late 17th century book of common prayer. What makes this copy unique is the large number of annotations made to the front flyleaves and rear blanks in a neat, contemporary hand. It traces a family genealogy from the first owner, Margaret Beale in 1710 through her descendents, Robert Aylmer and wife Catherine, to the last entry dated 1878. A lovely example of a religious text being passed through generations of family.
