A French mustard glaze terracotta jug. Circa 1900, with a pinched spout and loop handle, height 25cm, together with two French earthenware milk jugs (3). The collection of the late potter Peter Smith of Bojewyan Pottery in West Cornwall. Fellow of the Craftsman Potters Association, member of Newlyn Society of Artists and later chairman of Newlyn Gallery. Peter was also an influential teacher of ceramics at Falmouth University, where he encouraged a spontaneous and improvised approach based on developing technique and an understanding of the medium of clay as an expressive and practical form. Peter originally started as a research chemist before turning to pottery after attending evening classes. He started his own pottery at Bojewyan in West Cornwall in 1974. As well as being a renowned and experimental potter and tutor, he was also a keen collector of medieval and later pottery from the UK and further afield.
