The Ecorider Hippo, built by Ecorider Ltd., Naim, Scotland, developed a small, diesel-powered off-road motorcycle targeted toward agriculture, forestry, grounds care, construction, utility and other applications where high mobility, low cost and low environmental impact would be a benefit. It was available with a choice of diesel or petrol engines, a tubular steel frame and heavy-duty plastic body components.
The rear suspension uses a single, nonadjustable spring and damper arrangement under the seat. Up front there is no suspension, so road shocks are absorbed by the tires. The 23 x 11-8 ATV tires inflated to only 4 psi provide a ground pressure of only 1 to 2 psi, resulting in less ground compaction from the 52 in. long vehicle than that of a person walking, the company said.
Power comes from a 230 cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder, Hatz 1B20 industrial diesel engine rated 4.6 hp at 3600 rpm, with 8 lb.ft. of torque at 2400 rpm. Both the seat and the frame covers can be removed completely to allow access to the engine compartment for maintenance. Fuel consumption is said to be equivalent to 120 mpg. Engine power is transmitted to the rear wheel through an automatic clutch torque converter with high, low and reverse gears. A heavy-duty, 5/8 in. pitch chain provides the final drive.
This example has recently come down from Scotland and is full running order, it has been ridden around our auction site.
