Jaguar's SS100 was unveiled to great acclaim in 1936 and continued in production until 1938. Most were fitted with 2.5-litre engines, although the very last batch used 3.5-litre engines to boost performance. The engines were based on the proprietary Standard 20 engine, which was then fitted with a Weslake overhead valve conversion. A seven main-bearing crankshaft meant the engine was quite well engineered. Its twin SU carburettors were de rigueur on any contemporary car with sporting pretensions. The gearbox was another proprietary unit, in this case a Moss four-speed. The SS100 had a claimed power output of 77 kW, a top speed of almost 160 km/h. In 1936 all of this could be yours for a mere £395.
With prices for the genuine article well beyond mere mortals there is a small market in replicas. Some of these will now set you back around £80,000, with used examples fetching £40,000 to £50,000 and beyond. However, there is an alternative from the USA and this what we have on offer to day. Not for the purist but very affordable and still great fun to own.
This SS100 replica is equipped with a 3.2 litre (probably Mustang) six cylinder engine, which is mated to an automatic transmission. It is equipped with a luggage rack, stereo and many correct SS100 parts. The vendor states that the car is quite powerful and offers a good turn of speed.
Great period styling on a budget.
