Circa 1900 Marine School, Possibly an illustration for a book. Watercolour and gouache, ' Escape Attempt ' a Napoleonic Naval illustration of an English Naval officer being rowed by two Seamen / Sailors , he appears to have stolen a Document box ( which may have battle plans within , which he is contemplating dropping overboard if he is caught!) . Scene shows the English rowing boat with bullet holes and the Negro oarsman , having Naval uniform behind him and wearing a cutlass , having been shot by the chasing Napoleonic enemy in a closing rowing boat. Titled to back board 9 3/4 x 14 1/4'' The English Navy was not compiled of just Englishmen. There were known to be many ethnic sailors , some no doubt were former slaves , or from a slavery origin .
