CAMEL - TANG DYNASTY - CHINA - 7th - 10th CENTURY Camel in red terracotta with pigments. China, Shaanxì Province. Tang dynasty (7th - 10th century). The statue in red terracotta has maintained a good preservation of the pigments that decorate it. The animal of graceful proportions, in a standing position, rests on a rectangular base. The accentuated realism of the head with an open mouth, manifest the ability of observation of the artisans of the time. The two-humped Bactrian camel was known in Tang China as an indispensable means of transportation on the Silk Road.
