Back in the 1960’s the Scimitar SE4, with a total production of less than 300, was a rare car. It is difficult to be exact, but survivors still currently on the road can probably be counted in just 10’s.

The SE4, with its Ford straight six engine and triple SU carbs, was in fact a rebodied Reliant Sabre Six, and what a body it was. Designed by Ogle, it was always a handsome coupe and was well received back in 1964 when it was revealed at the London Motor Show. Today, some 55 years later, as testimony to that design studio, it is undoubtedly still a very pretty car.

HDB 789D is car number 262 and is documented within the RSSOC. The Green Log Book is present with the first owner being Derek Warburton Motor Cycles Ltd from Stockport. The car appears to have been in regular use well into the 1980’s. Subsequently, the recorded mileage did not then really increase in the next 20 years, and all of the records and MOT’s would suggest that the current mileage of 75,328 is probably correct.

During 2007, 2008, and 2009, the then owner, a Mr J P Evans, carried out a total rebuild of HDB 789D. This was a body off renovation with an exchange chassis, all new suspension, engine rebuild, and gel coat respray in original blue by a Lotus specialist. The total cost back then was over £12,000 for parts and specialists alone, without taking into account anything for his considerable time. There is a large file of invoices and receipts covering the work.

In 2011 the car changed hands, and while with the last two owners it has been well looked after with further expenditure. Over the last few years the car has been used regularly and has entered Classic Car Runs, and there are pictures and press cuttings covering numerous events.

HDB 789D still presents very well with its lovely blue metallic paint and painted wire wheels. The interior remains very original and in good condition, with the correct formica wood effect dash, which often gets replaced. The engine bay is well detailed, and the chassis and underside are finished to a similar high standard.

On the road the car performs well, with the engine pulling willingly in all gears, and the exhaust note is just lovely from the custom Alumex exhaust. There is an overdrive on 3rd and 4th and the gearbox and drive train perform without any undue noise or whine. This appears to be a well-sorted car that is ready to be enjoyed. It comes with all the aforementioned paperwork as well as a copy of the rare owners handbook, original press reviews, workshop manual and tool kit.
