A royal presentation carved mother-of-pearl and abalone jewel box, mid 20th c, the wooden box veneered in plain and chequered mother-of-pearl and applied with hi-relief ornament on the lid, centred by a crown, bordered by stylised flowers and scrolling foliage, the sides with similar hi-relief panels, 15cm h; 26 x 34cm, sold with a letter from the Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, London, 9 December 1963 and a press cutting of the box being presented to the chairman of Leatherhead Urban Council, flanked by members of the Leatherhead Freedom from Hunger Committee, captioned "...the jewel casket presented by the King of Jordan formed the prize for a competition in aid of the campaign."
Provenance: Presented by H M King Hussein of Jordan (1935-1999), accompanied with an inscription which in translation, reads "The Save the Children Fund in Britain"
