£90
A Japanese Meiji or Taishô period (1868-1926) tanto or kaiken dagger. The item consists of two components: the fixed-blade dagger and its associated cylindrical scabbard (saya). The handle (tsuka) and the scabbard are crafted entirely from Bone, as confirmed by material analysis. Both components feature intricate, continuous relief carving depicting figural scenes, including individuals in traditional dress and wide-brimmed hats, interspersed with floral and geometric banding. The carved details are enhanced by dark staining or ink. The blade is a straight, single-edged steel form.
