Tuck Chang (1870-1920), a late 19th century eight-piece lady's silver dressing table set comprising large hand-held mirror (30.5cm length), companion hairbrush, two differing sized clothes brushes, a shoe horn, a boot pull, a rectangular tray and a heavy circular silver box (9.75cm diameter), each piece decorated in relief with bamboo trees and leaves etc., the rectangular tray engraved with bamboo leaves and swallows, each bearing circular central cartouche engraved with 'E'. Active in the late 19th century, Tuk Chang is undoubtedly the most popular retail silversmith of Shanghai, thus often referred to as the 'Wang Hing of Shanghai'. Tuck Chang relied on several artisans to keep up with the demand of silver trophies, souvenirs, tea services and high-quality gift items required by the international resident community of Shanghai and, despite the large number of items produced, the company managed to maintain very high quality standards and innovative designs, aware of the most recent Western trends.
