An example of the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM), Malaysian Service Medal, named to: Chief Mech I M T Wigton RN.
The PJM was issued un-named, but many have been privately named, as in this case. Chief Mech is the rate of Chief Mechanician, a senior non-commissioned officer rank in the Engineering branch of the royal Navy, which has now been superseded by the title ‘Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Marine/Engineering Mechanic’.
This is an example of the officially issued, higher quality PJM, originally announced by the government of Malaysia in 2004, to reward Malaysian service personnel, and also members of the British and Commonwealth armed forces, who had served with, or been seconded to, the armed forces of Malaysia during the latter period of the Malayan Emergency (1957-1960) and the Confrontation with Indonesia (1963–1966). There have been subsequent issues, which are of markedly inferior quality, and reproductions have been produced by several manufacturers. But this example is the genuine article! After considerable prevarication, permission for British recipients to wear this award in uniform was finally given in 2011.
Accompanied by a copy photograph of some old soldiers, two of whom are wearing the PJM.
Extremely Fine (EF).
